Programs benefit adult Indigenous learners

Adult Indigenous students are finding education support in innovative programs that provide alternative methods of learning. In the Wet'suwet'en community of Moricetown, BC, adult Indigenous learners are accessing high school and postsecondary courses simultaneously through the University and College Education Program. Through the on-reserve program, students receive instruction and academic support as well as a living allowance.

Nunavut and Greenland working to establish student exchange program

Nunavut students may soon be able to participate in a student exchange program with Greenland. Officials with Nunavut Arctic College and Clyde River's Piqqusilirivvik School are working with high school Knud Rasmussenip Højskolia and trade and mining school Sanaartornermik Ilinniarfik, both located in the community of Sisimiut, Greenland, to establish an exchange program. Inuktitut is a dominant language in both regions, which will allow students to study in their home language. Students will also be able to access educational and cultural programs not available in their home countries.

AFOA Canada and TRU sign articulation agreement

Thompson Rivers University has signed an articulation agreement with AFOA Canada that will allow certain AFOA graduates to apply credits to business degrees at TRU. Under the new arrangement, graduates of the Certified Aboriginal Financial Managers and Certified Aboriginal Professional Administrators programs can apply credits towards TRU’s Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Commerce, or Bachelor of Public Administration. “The new partnership supports TRU’s strategic priority of promoting diversity, inclusion, and intercultural understanding with the Aboriginal community.

Design team selected for Nunavut Arctic College expansion, community centre

Nunavut and Arctic College have selected Toronto-based Teeple Architects and Winnipeg’s Cibinel Architecture to design the college’s expansion and a new community centre in Iqaluit. The facilities are scheduled to accommodate 269 students and 37 staff by August 2019. A release states that the facilities will include fine arts and multimedia classrooms, fisheries training classrooms, digital labs, kitchen classrooms, and other versatile learning spaces.

ON universities partner with Aboriginal institutions to create pathways for learners

Two new partnerships will provide additional pathways for Aboriginal learners to access postsecondary training in Ontario. Nipissing University has signed articulation agreements with AFOA Canada that will provide graduates of AFOA’s Certified Aboriginal Financial Manager (CAFM) diploma program with credits towards Nipissing’s BBA or BComm degree programs. AFOA recently formed a similar partnership with Cape Breton University.

NorQuest celebrates first year of Aboriginal career centre

NorQuest College is celebrating the first year of its Alberta Aboriginal Construction Career Centre (AACCC). The centre was established last year through a partnership between NorQuest, Bow Valley College, government, industry, and Aboriginal groups.

Queen’s and SLC receive funding for projects that will benefit Aboriginal learners

The Ontario government has announced funding for Queen’s University and St Lawrence College that will support the success of Aboriginal learners in the region. Queen’s will receive $42,719 in 2016–17 for its Self-Identification Project, which will develop Aboriginal student self-identification practices and improve the functionality of the student records system. Currently, Aboriginal students can self-identify during the application process; the project will expand that opportunity so Aboriginal students can choose to self-identify later during their education.

AB students partner on unique art project about reconciliation

Students from the Blood Reserve recently partnered with students from a Calgary middle school on a reconciliation-themed art project. Students in grades 5–9 from Sir John Franklin School in Calgary and grades 6–8 from Tatsikiisaapo’p Middle School (TMS) first researched current and historic Aboriginal issues before starting a variety of artworks; the art was “half-created” before students exchanged the pieces and finished the work started by the partner school.

Okanagan, Westbank First Nation sign collaboration MOU

Okanagan College and the Westbank First Nation have signed an MOU committing to a deeper partnership. Under the agreement, both organizations will work together to increase access to PSE and build professional capacity. “Okanagan College and Westbank First Nation have been working together for decades,” said Okanagan President Jim Hamilton.

UBC law scholar wins bid for rights hearing after being denied tenure

The BC Human Rights Tribunal has dismissed the no-evidence motion put forward by UBC in the case of former UBC professor Lorna June McCue. According to the National Post, McCue was denied tenure and did not have her contract renewed by UBC in 2012, partially due to a failure to submit any peer-reviewed research during her term of employment.
