2U eliminates online course consortium

April 4, 2014

Online education provider 2U has decided to shut down its digital course consortium initiative, Semester Online, and will instead develop fully-online undergraduate degree programs. The Semester Online initiative was announced in fall 2012 as a platform for top-tier universities to offer online courses to paying students. “Semester Online was always an experiment,” says 2U Senior VP Communications Chance Patterson. “The pilot program experienced significant challenges related to the complexities of a consortium structure.” Inside Higher Ed reports that the Semester One pilot lost some of its founding members and struggled with low enrolment following its launch. 2U has unveiled its first undergraduate degree program, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program developed in partnership with Simmons College.
