BC to offer partial HST rebate to universities, public colleges

January 15, 2010

The BC government announced last Thursday a rebate program for public bodies, including universities and colleges, to ensure that, on average, these institutions will not pay any more provincial HST after harmonization than they currently pay in PST. When the HST comes into effect July 1, BC intends to provide rebates of 75% of the provincial portion of the HST for eligible universities and public colleges. The University of Victoria's executive director of financial services says the school is quite pleased with the announcement, as uVic estimated it would be a "$7-million issue" if didn't get a rebate.
