Campus groups, Elections Canada create on-campus initiatives to encourage youth to vote

October 9, 2019

Campus groups across the country are engaging in a variety of initiatives to bolster the student vote. The initiative ranges from pledge drives where students can win prizes for signing up to vote to Elections Canada’s expansion of the Vote on Campus initiative to enable students to vote on 119 university and college campuses. University Affairs states that there appears to be a marked attempt by organizations to harness the momentum from the last general election which saw 57% of Canadians aged 18 to 24 vote. “Campus initiatives are critical because they become ways for students and the university community more broadly to have its voice heard when decisions are made,” said Ryerson University Advisor to the Dean John Beebe. “It’s also a great opportunity to demonstrate to the political parties that university students do vote.” Elections Canada | University Affairs (National)
