Centennial's HYPE program brings high-need youth back to college track

August 13, 2012

Centennial College's HYPE (Helping Youth Pursue Education) program is a summer course that gives young people, often dropouts, from high-need Toronto neighbourhoods a 6-week taste of college. More than a third of HYPE participants have enrolled at the college this fall. The program was launched in 2004 with funding from Ontario's Youth Challenge Fund, but when that funding dried up 3 years ago, Centennial took it over and now covers the $160,000 annual bill itself. "It's part of a whole outreach office we have set up to connect with the community, especially women and aboriginals and people who have lost track of their educational path," says the manager of Centennial's outreach office.
