CSA concerned over removal of “vote anywhere” advanced polling stations

July 15, 2021
The Calgary Student Alliance is expressing concern over Elections Calgary’s decision to remove “vote anywhere” advanced polling stations. The polling stations, which were located in postsecondary institutions in Calgary, allowed Calgarians to vote regardless of their residence. Elections Canada made the decision due to safety concerns related to the pandemic, but students are concerned that it will reduce accessibility to voting. “Not having the vote anywhere stations is a huge accessibility issue for students,” said Marley Gillies, chair of the Calgary Students Alliance (CSA). “It’s kind of a daunting experience to go and vote, especially in a complex election like the one that we’re seeing coming up in the fall. ... And students already have a pretty low voter turnout.” CBC | CTV News | Calgary Herald (AB)
