Gallaudet Bulldozes Student Protesters

October 27, 2006

For almost a month now, campus tensions have been escalating at Washington DC college for the deaf Gallaudet University. More than 100 protesters were arrested by police last week. On Wednesday the confrontation reached another incredible peak when the university used a front-end loader to clear out a student camp, injuring several students in the process. Jane K. Fernandes, former Provost and now president-designate, has refused to step down. A majority of faculty have called for her resignation, and 20 trustees have scheduled an emergency meeting Sunday.
