Goodbye Ryerson, hello TMU: New institution name formally approved

The new name for Ryerson University has formally been released: Toronto Metropolitan University. The name honours the institution’s location in the heart of Canada’s biggest city and its aspirations to expand its reputation and reach. “I cannot think of a better name for our university,” said Ryerson President Mohamed Lachemi. “I am so grateful to the University Renaming Advisory Committee for their dedication and determination in finding a name that will unify us for decades to come.” The name was approved Tuesday morning and takes effect immediately. The transition to the new name will happen in phases, and TMU notes that the amendment of the Ryerson University Act – which is necessary for the new name to be reflected on legal documents – will require the involvement of the Government of Ontario.
