Hazing not just for frats, sports teams

March 19, 2008

A recent US study found that more than half of students involved with campus organizations experience hazing.  More than 66% of fraternity, sorority and varsity athletics groups experience hazing.  Students in performing arts and academic clubs are not exempt either, and experience hazing at rates of 50% and 33% respectively.  Researchers report that hazing is "woven into the fabric of student life and campus culture, and often dismissed as silly pranks or harmless antics," even though hazing by definition humiliates, degrades or endangers students.  The Chronicle of Higher Education (subscription required)
