More international students immigrating to Canada: Report

July 9, 2021
A larger percentage of international students are choosing to immigrate to Canada. CIC News says that since 2000, three out of 10 international students have gained permanent residency. Those pursuing graduate-level degrees had higher rates on average: Half of master’s degree students and six in 10 doctoral students have become permanent residents. The number of international students enrolled in non-university postsecondary education has reportedly more than doubled between 2010 and 2014, which CIC News suggests means that students may be pursuing these programs as a way to pursue permanent residency. International students were more likely to become permanent residents if they had worked during their studies or after graduation (60%) and if they had secured higher paying jobs. CIC News (National)
