Open textbooks gaining success in PSE

January 15, 2014

University Business reports on the growing trend of PSE institutions providing students with free or low-cost textbooks. BC this week announced that its Open Textbook project has allowed almost 300 PSE students to access free online texts. The State University of New York’s Open Textbook program posted its first 2 digital titles in October, and is preparing to release dozens more. Rice University’s OpenStax College, which launched in 2012, has seen 360 institutions and 53,000 students use its textbooks. It has also welcomed funding from several philanthropic organizations. The math department at Scottsdale Community College in Arizona only uses open resources for its 6 courses. “We’ve been able to save students about 85% of their costs on their materials,” says Scottsdale’s Math Department Chair Donna Gaudet.
