PEI forgives student loans for those who develop severe disabilities
PEI has announced that it will forgive the provincial student loans of any borrowers who develop a severe disability. Before now, people with severe disabilities could apply to have their loans forgiven, but they required a ministerial order from the province. The new measures have been adopted under the provincial student financial assistance program and are effective immediately. Anyone who qualifies for the severe permanent disability benefit under the Canada Student Loan Program will immediately have their provincial loans forgiven. "This new policy will lift the debt load from people whose disabilities prevent them from earning an income, and allow them to focus their energies elsewhere," said Advanced Learning Minister Richard Brown.
