ON to provide free tuition to students from low-income families

February 26, 2016

Ontario announced yesterday that it will offer free college and university tuition to the vast majority of students from households earning less than $50 K per year. Simona Chiose of the Globe and Mail writes that the new changes made to student aid in ON’s provincial budget represent “the most radical shift in decades in how the province delivers loans and grants to postsecondary students.” Finance Minister Charles Sousa told reporters that the cost of the new program would be “roughly the same” as current student aid programming, claiming that it will unite a complicated system of loan and grants programs under the banner of the Ontario Student Grant (OSG).
