Queen's student leader asked to resign over Facebook posting

November 4, 2008

The Alma Mater Society of Queen's University is asking for the resignation of Arts and Science Undergraduate Society president Jacob Mantle for a discriminatory comment he posted on Facebook. Mantle wrote "I like your Taliban picture" on a friend's Facebook Wall in a response to a photo of 2 girls wearing scarves and sunglasses. The issue of impeachment has been brought up should Mantle not resign. It will be up to members of ASUS (arts and science students, not the governing body itself) to initiate an impeachment process. Mantle has apologized for his comment and says he has not yet made up his mind about whether or not he will resign. Queen's Journal (student newspaper) | Queen's responds to discrimination

Correction: Nov 6 2008

Members of Queen's University's Arts and Science Undergraduate Society may initiate an impeachment process for president Jacob Mantle over a Facebook comment, not the Alma Mater Society as we reported in yesterday's issue. Neither the AMS nor the ASUS' governing body itself have the authority to force Mantle to resign. The item has been corrected on our website.
