Toronto students struggle with housing, isolation: Study

May 6, 2019

The findings of a study by StudentDwellTO have found that university students in Toronto are facing challenges in finding affordable housing and are feeling isolated by long commutes. The initiative, launched by Ryerson University, OCAD University, the University of Toronto, and York University in 2017, seeks to examine housing issues faced by their 180,000 students and gather data to navigate a path forward. Student focus groups revealed that students feel that university residence spaces are limited in availability and not worth the cost after first year, while off-campus options are often overcrowded, discriminatory against students, and very costly. The students asked for affordable on-campus options, support and guidance with finding off-campus housing, and more places for downtime and studying.York [ON]
