uManitoba sued over late fees

March 10, 2009

The University of Manitoba is the subject of a class-action lawsuit launched by a student over late fees charged on tuition payments, which are described as "excessive, harsh and unconscionable." uManitoba students who are late paying tuition are charged $50. If tuition is not paid after 2 weeks, students must de-register and pay another $40. A lawyer acting on behalf of the student who filed the suit says the interest rate the university charges is prohibited under the Criminal Code of Canada. uManitoba plans to file a statement of defence before the end of the month.
