UPEI Student Union rejects fraternity

March 14, 2019

The organizers of a fraternity at the University of Prince Edward Island say they will continue to recruit members even though the school’s student union rejected their bid for ratification, CBC reports. UPEI Student Union President Will McGuigan told CBC the fraternity was turned down because of its men-only orientation, and that the union was also concerned about the potential for binge-drinking and hazing. Fraternity organizer Grant Harrison said the association between fraternities and movies like Animal House is outdated, and that his group has made it clear that membership is open to people of all genders. McGuigan said the fraternity is welcome to reapply with the union. CBC (PEI)
