US colleges ponder 3-year degrees

A number of American institutions are considering shaving a year off their undergraduate programs to save students time and money. Proponents of the 3-year degree model say it would work well for ambitious students who know what they want to study, while critics argue it would compromise an undergraduate's academic and social experience, and that college would veer more towards job training and away from broad-based education.
