UVic releases final report on BMSC field trips

July 12, 2021
The University of Victoria has released its final report on conducting field trips to the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre (BMSC) in the wake of a fatal 2019 bus crash. Times Colonist says that UVic has implemented all 43 of the report’s recommendations, and that it has applied these lessons more broadly to ensure preparedness for off-campus emergencies. Changes include traveling during the day, enforcing safety equipment use, having a mass crisis emergency plan, and including a senior staff member who is trained in first aid. UVic will also use a hazard assessment and control program when determining the mode of transportation to be used for travel, and will ensure that students have provided emergency contact information upon registration for activities.
