YouTube video captures violent arrest of UWO student

October 15, 2009

A YouTube video showing the arrest of a 22-year-old male student at the University of Western Ontario is raising debate among students and the public about whether police used excessive force. Campus police responded to calls late Wednesday afternoon about a student following another student "in a strange manner," and that a disoriented and threatening individual was trying to enter various offices in a campus building. After the suspect barricaded himself in an office, city police were called. The video shows officers pinning down the man, yelling at him to stop resisting, and periodically striking him. The suspect was eventually subdued and tried to flee once he was led outside. The resistance continued after he was transported to hospital. The student has been charged with mischief, resisting arrest, assault, and escaping custody. On its website, the London Free Press includes both the YouTube video and a half-hour of video of UWO's press conference on the incident.
